"Samson" is a song originally by Regina Spektor that Melanie Martinez covered live at a talent show in 2010 and on her YouTube channel however, the video was later deleted.

Background[]

Melanie sang this cover when she was around the age of 15.

Theme[]

This song is about the love story between Samson and Delilah, which is a story in the Bible. In the story in the Bible, it is told from third-person, explaining Samson's feelings for her. The Bible portrays her to be an evil woman. In the story from the Bible, Samson is an incredibly strong man. His hair was the source of his strength, which had never been cut from birth. Frustrated at losing so many soldiers, the Philistines hired Delilah to find out the source of his strength. After several nights, he told her his secret. She then cut off his hair while he was sleeping. Samson was then captured by the Philistines and strapped to some columns in a public forum. After having his hair cut, he "couldn't bring the columns down", "couldn't destroy a single one". Afterwards, life wasn't the same for Samson, but the Bible didn't mention what happened to Delilah. In Regina's retelling of the story, it is told from Delilah's perspective. In her version, Delilah always loved Samson.

Lyrics[]

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth
I have to go, I have to go
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of wonder bread
And went right back to bed

History books forgot about us
The Bible didn't mention us
The Bible didn't mention us
Not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came falling on our heads
But they're just old light, they're just old light
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson went back to bed
Told me that my hair was red
Told me I was beautiful
And came into my bed

Oh, I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors and the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
And kissed me 'til the morning light, the morning light
Kissed me 'til the morning light, I

Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
Ate a slice of wonder bread
And went right back to bed

Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down
Couldn't destroy a single one
The history books forgot about us
The Bible didn't mention us
Not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first
