The song was written by Miles Nasta and Melanie for their friend, Kristina Stanton, who wrote about the demo on her blog page, stating:
"While I was there [New York] Mel showed me the demo of the first song Miles and she wrote entirely together called Half Hearted - and it was inspired by the ending of my relationship to my husband. They wrote it together from the perspective of 'how any guy' should have felt if he and I broke up. How sweet is that?"
