PORTALS (expected title) is the upcoming second theatrical full-length film by Melanie Martinez which would have been attached to her third studio album of the same name, PORTALS. Though it was expected to release sometime in 2023-2024[1], it continues to be postponed due to a lack of funding by Melanie's label.[2]

2019[]

In an interview with People Magazine on September 6th, 2019, Melanie announced how she'd planned out her next two films after K-12, "I have my next film planned out, as far as what I want to do – and the film after that and they both have albums attached to them." Within the same interview, Melanie stated that she would probably be able to finish up her next film faster, as she had refined her skills after making the first one, saying that: "Hopefully it will be faster this time. It won't be like, four years. Just because, I've done it at least once so now I'm past all those learning curves that I had to kind of reach and figure out."[3] Although she said this it has been over 4 years since she stated this.

Also in 2019, at the LA Premiere with an interview with HOLLYWOOD FIRST LOOK , Melanie stated that "Cry Baby will grow and evolve" in a spiritual way. This confirmed that the new album connects to K-12 and it will be a sequel to the story.

2020[]

During an Instagram Q&A on January 8th, 2020, where Melanie asked fans for questions relating to her musical future in 2020, she mentioned her next film. A fan asked "Will we have a new film?", to which Melanie replied, "I'm planning on putting out music videos for this year. As for the next film I make, it will be attached to my third album and that will probably take a while to conjure up." This proved that her second film would be a musical like K-12.

In an interview with Travis Mills on October 27th, 2020, Melanie said that she was on page 50 of the script of the accompanying film, later on The Travis Mills Show, she stated that she had finished the script.[4]

Also on the Travis Mills Show, Melanie stated that the movie would ratio out to have more film than musical scenes, referencing the amount of film-time taken up by music in her previous film, K-12.[5]

Within an interview with Beats 1, Melanie talked about her film being more existential, meaning it would relate more to life than her previous film, K-12.

2021-2022[]

On January 7th, 2021, in an interview with Grammy Museum, Melanie claimed Cry Baby would "evolve".[6]

On May 12th, 2021, Melanie had sent a draft script of the movie to Atlantic Records to get a budget.[7] One of the concept ideas Melanie had for the draft script had "Void" being the opening for it and then ending the movie with "Dragon's Blood".[8]

On February 21st, 2022, during a meet & greet, she stated that would like to create music videos for their favorite songs from PORTALS, and release the film separate from the album. [citation needed]

2023-present[]

On February 19th, 2023, Melanie confirmed the movie, unlike the album, was unfinished at the time and would take at least another year to finish and release.[1]

On March 31st, 2023, Melanie replied to a fan comment on TikTok saying that the script for the film was finished about a year or two ago, however she doesn't have the funding for it right now and because of that filming hasn't started yet.

On November 21st, 2023, Melanie replied to a fan comment on Instagram saying that she would rather focus on the rest of the PORTALS music videos instead of the movie, and it would be too expensive for Atlantic Records to fund for both the movie and the rest of the music videos. Melanie states this again on an Instagram Q&A on November 25th, 2023, also stating she believes she will not magically have the funding to make the movie.

On January 19th 2024, Melanie was interviewed by Female Magazine where she was asked if she had aspirations to make another film after the success of K-12. Melanie answered that she finished the script and that she would have loved to release the film, but it would cost too much money to make, adding that she does not know if she will ever be able to make a PORTALS film. Melanie mentioned that she will eventually try to find a way to adapt the story in a different way.

On February 9th, 2024, Melanie explained why she chose to focus on filming the PORTALS music videos instead of working on the film through an Instagram reply. She stated that she prioritizes making music videos as it fits better with what she has done in the past.[9]
